PrajaNet Mission
Adding power to the multitude of people’s movements working to reform
the fundamental processes of governance in India.
History of PrajaNet
People's movement for governance reforms got a big impetus on May 2nd, 2002, when
the Supreme Court passed a landmark judgment directing the Election Commission
to issue orders for full disclosure by candidates contesting Parliamentary
and State Assembly elections. This landmark judgment generated hope and
a renewed faith in democracy.
A group of volunteers based in Bay Area came together
to start a signature campaign with a desire to increase awareness and
garner support to ensure nothing short of the full and honest enforcement
of this SC ruling is implemented. On January 26, 2003 the volunteers adopted
the name PrajaNet (People's Resolve to Act for Justice and Accountability
- Network) to support such efforts to bring about broader transparency
in civic life.
Since the signature campaign, the group has organized a variety of fund
raising and awareness events. The funds raised through such events are
used to financially support select programs of supported
groups.
Our volunteers take personal interest in
tracking these programs and helping them succeed.
PrajaNet Plan
To realize its vision, PrajaNet aims at:
- Extending its volunteer base from Bay Area to other regions in the
US, in India and globally.
- Establishing closer ties with local Indian groups and individuals
working towards governance reforms and people's empowerment.
- Establishing closer ties with government agencies and individuals
that have themselves initiated or are responsible for ensuring governance
reforms.
